Find the Right Words Even When You Don’t Know What to Say

Marriage gives us a front-row seat to another person’s life. We see the dreams they’re chasing, the stress they carry, the habits they’re trying to break, and the battles they may never talk about out loud.

That means one of the most powerful things we can do for our spouse is something they might never even see us doing: pray for them.

Not just when the marriage is struggling. Not only when we’re afraid something is wrong. Prayer can become part of the everyday rhythm of loving someone.

And the beautiful thing is, you don’t need perfect words. You simply need to bring the person you love before God.

Table of Contents

1. Pray for Their Relationship With God

Before praying for your spouse to become more patient, more affectionate, more responsible or more understanding, pray first for their heart.

Ask God to draw them closer to Him.

A strong marriage is wonderful, but neither spouse was meant to take the place of God in the other person’s life. We can love each other deeply and still recognize that only God can satisfy the deepest reaches of the soul.

Pray that your spouse will recognize God’s voice, seek His wisdom and grow in faith.

A Prayer for Your Partner:

“Lord, draw my spouse closer to You. Help them to know Your voice, trust Your direction and feel Your presence in every season. Give them a hunger for the things of God and the courage to follow where You lead.”

2. Pray for Their Mind

The person beside you may be carrying thoughts they have never spoken. Stress about money. Fear about the future. Pressure at work. Insecurity. Regret. Temptation. Exhaustion.

Philippians 4:7 speaks of the peace of God guarding our hearts and minds. That’s a beautiful thing to pray over your spouse.

Ask God to protect their thoughts from fear, discouragement, bitterness and lies about who they are. Pray for clarity when they are confused and for peace when life feels heavy.

3. Pray for Their Protection

We often think of protection as physical safety, and we should certainly pray for that. But protection can also mean spiritual, emotional and relational protection.

Pray that God protects your spouse from destructive decisions, unhealthy influences, temptation, resentment and anything that could slowly pull them away from God, their purpose or your marriage.

Psalm 91 is a beautiful passage to pray over someone you love.

You may not be able to follow your spouse everywhere they go, but your prayers can.

4. Pray for Their Purpose

Your spouse is more than the role they play in your life. They are also someone God created with gifts, responsibilities, dreams, talents and a purpose of their own.

Pray that God gives them wisdom about their next steps. Pray over their career, their calling, their parenting, their decisions and their confidence.

Ask God to open the right doors and close the ones that would lead them away from His best. Sometimes loving someone means cheering for the person God is helping them become.

5. Pray for Their Weak Places Without Judgment

This one can be difficult. Not every marriage is perfect, and even strong relationships have their ups and downs. Even if you’re praying for a cheating spouse, dealing with separation or going through marriage counseling, God is still there to listen.

When you know someone’s weaknesses as closely as you know your spouse’s, prayer can easily turn into a complaint disguised as a request.

If you’re thinking about your husband, you may be inclined to start, “Lord, please make him finally understand.”

If you’re praying for your wife, you might be tempted to start, “God, please make her stop …” (buying so many shoes, vacuuming around my feet when I am sitting on the couch, or whatever annoying habit has been bothering you lately.

But prayer is not a place to build a case against our spouse. It’s a place to bring our concerns to God while remembering that we need grace too.

Instead of simply praying, “God, change them,” we can pray:

“God, strengthen them where they struggle. Give them wisdom where they are vulnerable. And show me how to love them with both truth and grace.”

That kind of prayer changes the atmosphere of a marriage because it changes the heart of the person praying too.

6. Pray for Your Marriage

Marriage does not stay strong by accident. Pray for friendship between you. Pray for laughter. Pray for honest conversations. Pray for healthy intimacy. Pray that small frustrations do not become deep resentment. Pray that both of you learn how to apologize, forgive, listen and begin again.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 tells us that a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Many Christians have long seen that picture as a beautiful reminder of what happens when God remains at the center of a marriage.

Invite Him into yours again and again.

7. Pray for Them Even When You're Angry

Some of the most meaningful prayers for a spouse may happen when you don’t feel particularly loving. Marriage includes moments of disappointment, frustration and misunderstandings.

In those moments, prayer can keep hurt from hardening into bitterness. You don’t have to pretend everything’s fine. God already knows what happened. Tell Him you are angry. Tell Him you are hurt. Tell Him what you wish was different. Then, pray for your spouse anyway.

Not because bad behavior should be ignored, and not because prayer replaces healthy boundaries or difficult conversations but because resentment should never become the loudest voice in your heart.

8. Ask God to Show You How to Love Them Better

One of the bravest prayers in marriage may be:

“Lord, show me what I cannot see about myself.”

Ask God where you need more patience, more kindness, more honesty, more listening and more humility.

Marriage becomes healthier when our prayers are not exclusively focused on fixing the person across from us. Sometimes the answer to a prayer for your marriage begins with God doing something inside you.

Praying When You Have No Words

There may be seasons when you simply do not know what to pray or how to pray for your spouse. That’s okay. Say their name before God. Sit quietly. Open a Psalm. Thank God for one thing about them.

Or pray something as simple as:

“God, You know what they need today better than I do. Protect them. Guide them. Strengthen them. Heal the places that hurt. Give them wisdom for what they are facing and help me to love them well. Keep our marriage close to You. Amen.”

Prayer does not have to be impressive to be powerful. Sometimes loving your spouse looks like holding their hand. Sometimes it looks like making dinner after a long day. Sometimes it looks like forgiving. And sometimes it looks like quietly whispering their name to God when nobody else is listening.

That may be one of the greatest acts of love we can give.
