Simple Prayers to Say Before Bedtime

Nightstand, bed and lamp before bedtime prayers

A Gentle Way to End the Day in Prayer

At the end of the day, the room gets quiet. But your mind may not. Sometimes, bedtime is peaceful. Other times, it’s when the day shows up again. Unfinished thoughts. Old worries. The weight you didn’t notice until you stopped moving.

Bedtime prayers for adults can take different shapes. Some are short and simple. Some are for nights when your mind is loud. Some are for your body, your home or someone you love. Use what fits the moment you’re in. There’s no pressure to pray the same way every night.

Here are some bedtime prayers you can use tonight. Read them out loud. Whisper them. Or let them help you find your own words.

Table of Contents

A Prayer to Let the Day Go

Anxiety is common. The noise inside your head may seem louder in the quiet of the night. Trust God to give you peace.

“Throw all your anxiety onto him, because he cares about you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (CEB)

Some days cling to you at night. God invites you to place the weight down and trust Him with what you cannot finish.

“Cast your burden on the Lord —
he will support you!
God will never let the righteous be shaken!” — Psalm 55:22 (CEB)

A Bedtime Prayer for Letting Go

“Father, thank You for getting me through today.
I’m handing You what I can’t fix and what I can’t carry.
You are wise, and You are good, even when I feel unsure.
Help me stop holding this day so tight.
Help me trust You with what I’m leaving undone.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

A Prayer for a Tired Body

Work and the grind of daily life can take a toll on your body and your spirit. Give yourself permission to rest while God watches over you.

“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NASB)

God is not disappointed by your limits. He cares for you in your weakness and invites you to rest.

“Because God knows how we’re made,
God remembers we’re just dust.” — Psalm 103:14 (CEB)

A Bedtime Prayer for Recovery

“Lord, my body is tired.
Please give me real rest tonight.
You made me. You know my limits.
Please help me sleep, and let my strength come back.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

A Bedtime Prayer for Busy Minds

As the world slows down, many of us find that our minds speed up. Allow Scripture and prayer to calm your soul and prepare you for restful sleep.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7 (NASB)

When your thoughts will not slow down, God can meet you there. His peace is able to steady what feels unsettled.

“The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace,
Because he trusts in You.” — Isaiah 26:3 (NASB)

A Prayer to Calm Your Thoughts

“God, my thoughts keep running.
I keep replaying things I said and things I wish I could redo.
Please quiet my mind and guard my heart with Your peace.
You are here with me right now. I am not alone in this room.
Help me stop rehearsing conversations and start resting.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

A Prayer for a Peaceful House

Whether you’re home or away, you may always pray for God to watch over your house and those who live there.

“The Lord will guard you as you come and go,
both now and forever.” — Psalm 121:8 (NCV)

Night is not outside God’s care. You can ask Him to watch over your home and bring quiet to every room.

“When you lie down, you won’t be afraid;
when you lie down, you will sleep in peace.” — Proverbs 3:24 (NCV)

A Bedtime Prayer for Your Home

“Father, thank You for this home and this bed.
Please watch over this place tonight.
Keep us safe while we sleep.
Let this house be calm, and let our hearts be calm, too.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

A Prayer for Forgiveness and Fresh Starts

Forgiveness is one of the most fundamental messages of the Bible and the teachings of Jesus. It often starts within your own heart, and it’s fine to ask for guidance too.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (NIV)

You do not have to fall asleep holding guilt. God welcomes honest confession and gives a clean start.

“I told my sin to You. I did not hide my wrong-doing. I said, “I will tell my sins to the Lord.” And You forgave the guilt of my sin.” — Psalm 32:5 (NLV)

A Bedtime Prayer for Forgiveness

“Lord, if I sinned today, forgive me.
If I was harsh, forgive me.
If I held on to anger, forgive me.
Thank You for cleansing and restoring my heart.
Thank You that Your mercy is real, and I can lay my head down in peace.
Help me start again tomorrow with a clean heart.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

A Gratitude-Only Prayer

Evening is the perfect time to reflect on all of the joys that God has given you during the day and the week.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” — James 1:17 (CSB)

Even on hard days, God still gives good gifts. Gratitude helps you notice His kindness before you sleep.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his faithful love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1 (CSB)

A Prayer After a Good Day

“Father, thank You for the good You gave today, even if it was small.
Thank You for help, for food, for breath and for mercy.
Thank You for staying with me through every part of this day. I receive Your gifts with thanks.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

A Prayer for Someone You Love

Even in moments of pain and heartbreak, God is there for you and those you love.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (ESV)

Love does not always know what to do, but it can always pray. God is near to the hurting and sees them clearly.

“So don’t worry, because I am with you.
Don’t be afraid, because I am your God.
I will make you strong and will help you;
I will support you with my right hand that saves you.” — Isaiah 41:10 (NCV)

A Bedtime Prayer for Love and Healing

“Lord, I’m thinking about someone I care about tonight.
You know what they carry, even when they don’t say it out loud.
Please help them and be near to them.
Give them what they need for tomorrow.
Give them comfort right now.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

A Short Prayer for Trust

Sometimes, you have to trust God to do His work while you sleep.

“In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8 (NIV)

Rest is an act of trust. You can lie down in peace knowing that God is steady through the night.

“The Lord’s love never ends; his mercies never stop.
They are new every morning; Lord, your loyalty is great.” — Lamentations 3:22-23 (NCV)

A Bedtime Prayer to Place Your Trust in God

“God, I will lie down and sleep in peace because You are watching over me.
You will still be faithful in the morning.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

A Silent Prayer Before Sleep

Praying doesn’t mean that you always need to find the right words to please God. He may already know what you want to say.

“O Lord, You have looked through me and have known me. You know when I sit down and when I get up. You understand my thoughts from far away.”  — Psalm 139:1-2 (NLV)

God does not need many words to hear you. You can be quiet with Him and still be fully known.

“In the same way, the Holy Spirit helps us where we are weak. We do not know how to pray or what we should pray for, but the Holy Spirit prays to God for us with sounds that cannot be put into words.”  — Romans 8:26 (NLV)

A Bedtime Prayer for Quiet Times

“Father, sometimes I don’t have words tonight.
So I’m going to sit quietly with You.
I’m going to breathe. I’m going to stop trying to explain myself.
You already know my heart. Please meet me here in the quiet.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”

A “No Words Left” Prayer

Even in difficult times, remember a Psalm of David:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.”  — Psalm 23:1-2 (NKJV)

When you are empty, God is not. He can meet you with care and lead you into quiet rest.

“Blessed be the Lord,
Who daily loads us with benefits,
The God of our salvation! Selah”  — Psalm 68:19 (NKJV)

A Bedtime Prayer When There are Few Words Left

“Father, I don’t have many words tonight. But I’m here.
Please hold me steady while I sleep. Be my Shepherd tonight.
Lead me into quiet rest. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

There Is No Perfect Bedtime Prayer

Some nights you will pray with full sentences. Some nights you will pray with a whisper. Some nights you will pray and still feel tired, and that is okay. What matters is not how strong your words feel. What matters is that you bring your real self to a faithful God.

Let tomorrow wait. Let your mind slow down. And let your heart rest in the care of the One who does not leave you.  — Hebrews 13:5 (ESV).
