Bible Basics: Baptism
What the Bible Says about Baptism
If you grew up in the church, there’s a good chance you may have heard about baptism your whole life. Or perhaps you’re newer to faith and wondering what it truly means. Either way, baptism is an important spiritual practice, and it’s normal to have questions.
So what is baptism, according to the Bible? And why does it matter so much in the Christian faith? Let’s dive in together.
What does the Bible say about baptism?
In Scripture, baptism is presented as an outward expression of an inward transformation. It’s a public declaration of faith and a way of saying, “I belong to Jesus.”
Even Jesus Himself was baptized, and He later instructed His followers to do the same. If you turn to Matthew in the Bible, you’ll see Jesus’ clear instructions:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19 (NIV)
Throughout the New Testament, baptism always follows belief in Jesus. It’s a response to faith, not a requirement to earn God’s love.
“For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.” – Romans 6:4 (NLT)
To put it simply, baptism represents dying to an old way of life and stepping into something new with Christ.
Why is baptism important?
Baptism matters because it reflects obedience, surrender, and new life with Jesus. It’s a moment of alignment, when your heart’s decision becomes publicly visible.
It doesn’t make you perfect and it certainly doesn’t mean you’ll never struggle again. But it does mark a meaningful milestone in your faith journey. For many believers, baptism becomes a powerful reminder during hard seasons: I chose to follow Jesus.
This type of obedience and surrender can often bring us out of a place of control, anxiety and fear and into peace, purpose and love. We are no longer dead to our sins but instead are alive and made new in Christ!
What is Baptism? What isn't it?
Baptism is:
- A public declaration of faith
- An act of obedience to God
- An outward symbol of an inward decision
Salvation comes through faith alone, by God’s grace.
Baptism is not:
- A requirement for salvation
- A guarantee of instant spiritual maturity
- A performance for others
- A ticket into Heaven
It doesn’t save you; rather, it celebrates what God has already done in your heart.
Do you have questions about getting baptized?
If you’re reading this and feel a gentle nudge toward baptism, pause and reflect. That pull is often the Holy Spirit inviting you into a deeper step of faith.
Ask yourself:
- Do I believe Jesus is Lord?
- Do I desire to follow Him with my life?
- Am I ready to publicly identify with my faith?
Encouragement 🤗
If baptism feels scary, you’re not alone. Many people feel nervous about being seen or misunderstood. But baptism isn’t about having it all figured out, it’s about trusting the One who does.
God meets us in our obedience, even when our steps feel shaky. And if you’re not ready yet, that’s okay too. Faith is a journey, not a race.

A Prayer for Baptism Discernment
“God,
Thank You for loving me and calling me into a relationship with You. If baptism is a step You’re inviting me to take, please give me clarity and peace. Help me trust You with my questions, my fears, and my timing. I want to follow You with an open heart and a willing spirit. Lead me, and remind me that I never walk alone. Thank you for the work you’ve done in my life. May my testimony be an encouragement to other people.
Amen.”
