Bible 101: Where to Start Reading the Bible

Feeling overwhelmed by the Bible? You’re not alone!

God’s Word is living and active, and He meets us exactly where we are, even in our questions and uncertainty.

If you’re new to faith or returning after some time away, opening the Bible for the first time can feel intimidating. It’s a big book, written across centuries, filled with history, letters, and stories that don’t always make immediate sense. You might wonder, “Where do I even begin?”

If that sounds familiar, take a deep breath. You’re not behind, and you’re not doing it wrong.

Start here but if you have continued questions, then we have suggestions on How to Read the Bible!

Good Places to Start Reading the Bible

While every part of the Bible matters, some books are especially helpful for those just beginning their faith journey. Here are some recommendations if you’re not sure where to jump in:

The Gospel of John

John is often ecommended because it focuses deeply on who Jesus is: His love, His miracles, and His heart for humanity. It’s relational, reflective, and grounding. Not to mention, it’s a pretty “easy read” and simple to grasp.

Best for:

  • Understanding Jesus’ heart
  • New believers wanting clarity on faith
  • Relational, reflective readers

The Gospel of Mark

Mark is the shortest Gospel and very action-oriented. It moves quickly and keeps things simple.

Best for:

  • Readers who feel overwhelmed
  • Those who prefer fast-paced storytelling
  • Getting a clear picture of Jesus’ life
  • Most bible experts recommend Mark to start

The Book of Psalms

Psalms is a collection of prayers and songs that express real human emotion such as joy, grief, fear, gratitude, and hope. If you’re not sure what to say to God, the Psalms can give you the words.

Best for:

  • Learning how to pray
  • Emotional healing
  • Putting words to emotion
  • Reading a chapter at a time

 The Book of Proverbs

Proverbs offers practical wisdom for everyday life. Short and approachable, it’s a great place to read a little at a time. Some people enjoy reading one Psalm and One Proverb to start the day.

Best for:

  • Daily guidance
  • Readers who want practical takeaways
  • Building Godly habits

The Book of James

James is straightforward and practical. It focuses on how faith shows up in real life, through actions, speech, patience, and humility.

Best for:

  • Applying faith day-to-day
  • Readers who like clear direction
  • Living out what you believe
*Remember, you don’t need to read the Bible cover to cover to begin. Starting small is not only okay, it’s wise.

A Prayer for Your Bible Reading Journey

“God,

Thank You for inviting me into relationship with You. As I open Your Word, help me hear Your voice clearly. Deepen my faith, draw me closer to You, and teach me who You are. Allow me to slow down and eliminate all distractions so I can focus on what you want to teach me today. When I don’t understand, give me patience. When I feel unsure, give me peace. Speak to me through Your living Word, and guide me step by step as I learn to trust You more in every aspect of my life. I want to know You and walk closely with You.

Amen.”
