Curious About Christianity? Advice for New Believers

What It Really Feels Like Being a New Believer

Maybe you’ve found yourself thinking about God more lately.

Maybe you have started asking questions you never used to ask. You wonder who Jesus really is, whether prayer works or if there could be something more to life than simply getting through each day.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Over 2.7 million people come to Christianity each year, whether they are new to faith or converting from another religion. Being curious about Christianity doesn’t mean you’re expected to already understand the Bible, know all the right prayers or have your life perfectly together. In fact, curiosity can be the beginning of something beautiful. Sometimes, faith starts with nothing more than a quiet question: God, are You really there?

And sometimes that question (and the answer) changes everything.

What Does It Feel Like to Be a New Believer?

Becoming a Christian can be exciting, peaceful, emotional, confusing and, sometimes, all
those things at once.

For some people, accepting Jesus brings an immediate sense of relief. They feel as though
a burden has been lifted from their shoulders. Others experience faith more gradually. They begin noticing small changes in the way they think, the things they desire and how they respond to the world around them.

There’s no single “correct” emotional experience.

A new believer may feel incredibly close to God one day and full of questions the next. You may read Scripture and feel deeply moved, then open the Bible the following morning and have absolutely no idea what you just read.

That is normal.

Faith is not about knowing everything. It is about beginning a relationship with God and continuing to grow.

You Don't Have to Clean Yourself Up First

One of the biggest misunderstandings about Christianity is the idea that you must become
a better person before coming to God.

Christianity teaches exactly the opposite.

Jesus repeatedly welcomed people who were hurting, confused, ashamed, rejected or
struggling. He did not tell them to fix themselves before approaching Him.

God already knows your past.
He knows the parts of your story you wish you could rewrite.
And none of those things surprise Him.

The Christian faith begins with grace: the belief that salvation is a gift from God, not
something we earn by becoming perfect.

That means you can come to Him exactly where you are.

Start With Jesus

If you want to explore your faith, one of the best places to begin is by learning about Jesus Himself.

You don’t need to start reading the Bible from page one and force your way through hundreds of pages you don’t yet understand.

Try beginning with one of the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. John is especially helpful for people who are new to Christianity because it focuses strongly on who Jesus is and why He came.

As you read, ask simple questions:

  • What does this passage show me about Jesus?
  • How does Jesus treat people?
  • What does He say about God?
  • Is there something here I can apply to my own life?

You are not studying for a test. You are getting to know someone. That takes time.

Talk to God, Even If You Don't Know How

Prayer can feel intimidating when you are a new believer. You may hear other Christians pray beautifully and wonder whether your own prayers sound good enough.

Here is the secret: God is not grading your vocabulary.

Prayer is simply communication with Him.

You can say:

“God, I don’t really know what I am doing, but I want to know You.”

That is a prayer.

You can tell Him when you’re afraid, angry, grateful, confused, exhausted, hopeful or
disappointed.

You don’t have to pretend.

The Psalms are full of people speaking honestly to God about nearly every human emotion
imaginable. Scripture shows us that God would rather have an honest conversation than a
polished performance.

Find a Bible You Can Understand

Some Bible translations written in modern English can make Scripture much easier to understand. Popular choices for beginners include the New Living Translation (NLT), New International Version (NIV) and Christian Standard Bible (CSB).

You can also use a Bible app like that allows you to compare translations, listen to Scripture and follow beginner reading plans.

Start small. Ten or 15  minutes a day is better than trying to read 10 chapters at once, getting overwhelmed and giving up. Faith grows through consistency, not pressure.

Find Other Christians Who Will Help You Grow

Christianity was never meant to be lived completely alone. Finding a strong church or Christian community can help you learn, ask questions and build relationships with people who are walking the same spiritual road.

Don’t feel like you have to choose the first church you visit. Look for a community where:

  • Jesus and Scripture are central.
  • Questions are welcome.
  • Leaders treat people with humility and respect.
  • People care about one another beyond Sunday mornings.
  • Grace is taught alongside the truth.

Healthy Christian community should help you grow closer to Gid, not make you afraid to ask questions, especially ones that help you grow.

Explore Questions

New believers often worry that having doubts means their faith is weak.

It doesn’t.

Christians have wrestled with questions about suffering, science, prayer, Scripture, eternity, morality, and the nature of God for centuries.

You are allowed to learn.
You are allowed to investigate.
You are allowed to say, “I don’t understand this yet.”

Growing faith is a lifelong process.

Don't Compare Your Beginning to Someone Else's Middle

It’s easy to look at someone who has been following Christ for 20 years and think, I will
never know as much as they do.

But they, once, had their first day too.
They once opened the Bible without knowing where anything was.
They once had questions.
They once had habits they struggled to change.
Spiritual growth takes time.

Instead of asking, “Why aren’t I not further along?” ask, “What is God teaching me today?”

Small steps still move you forward.

Helpful Tips for Getting Started

f you’re ready to explore Christianity, keep your beginning simple.

  • Read a few verses of Scripture each day.
  • Talk honestly to God.
  • Learn about Jesus.
  • Attend a church service, or watch online.
  • Find trustworthy Christians you can ask questions.
  • Write down what you are learning and the things you want to understand better.

Most of all, give yourself permission to grow slowly. You don’t have to become a Bible expert overnight. You have the rest of your life to keep learning about God.

Faith Is a Relationship, Not a Performance

One of the most beautiful discoveries for a new believer is realizing that Christianity is not
simply about following religious rules.

It’s about knowing God.

There will be days when your faith feels incredibly strong and days when God seems quiet. There will be prayers that appear to receive answers quickly and others you may carry for years.

But Christianity offers something deeper than a temporary emotional experience. It offers a relationship with God who promises to walk with us through every season.

So, if you are curious about Christianity, keep asking questions.

If something inside you is telling you to explore your faith, follow that curiosity.

  • Open a Bible.
  • Whisper a prayer.
  • Learn about Jesus.

You don’t need to understand everything before you begin. Sometimes, faith begins with the smallest step toward God — and discovering that He has already been reaching toward you.
