Bible 101: Fasting
Introduction to Fasting for Christians
At some point in your faith journey, you may hear someone mention fasting and wonder what it means. Is it just about giving up food? Is it required? Does it make you more spiritual?
Fasting is one of the most meaningful yet often misunderstood spiritual practices in Christianity. It is not about punishment, proving your devotion, or trying to earn God’s favor. Instead, fasting is about intentionally creating space for God.
When we fast, we temporarily set aside something we depend on physically so we can focus more deeply on what we need spiritually. It shifts our attention from the noise of everyday life toward the presence of God.
To put it simply, fasting is less about what you give up and more about what you make room for in your life.
What Is Fasting?
Fasting usually involves abstaining from food for a period of time to seek God through prayer, repentance, or spiritual renewal.
We see this example through Jesus, who fasted before beginning His public ministry:
“After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.” – Matthew 4:2 (NIV)
Throughout Scripture, fasting often appears in moments when people need guidance, protection, breakthrough, or deeper intimacy with God.
But fasting isn’t just limited to food. Some people fast from social media, entertainment, distractions, or daily habits that compete for their attention.
The goal is always the same: draw closer to God.
Why Do Christians Fast?
Fasting is a way of saying, “God, I need You more than I need anything else.” It reorders our priorities and reminds us where our true sustenance comes from.
Jesus spoke about fasting with the expectation that we, as His followers, would practice it as well:
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do…” – Matthew 6:16 (NIV)
Notice He said “when,” not “if.”
Fasting helps posture our hearts toward humility and dependence on God rather than self-sufficiency. It allows us to trade what we want “now” for what we want “most,” which is Jesus.
We aren’t in denial. We know there are also misconceptions on fasting too. Feel free to explore those “doubts” but circle back here when you are ready.
4 Spiritual Benefits of Fasting
1. Greater Awareness of God
When distractions are eliminated, God’s voice often becomes clearer. Fasting creates intentional nearness to God.
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” – James 4:8 (ESV)
2. Spiritual Strength
Fasting reminds us that our strength does not come from constant indulgence but from God Himself.
“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” – Matthew 4:4 (NIV)
3. Heart Alignment
Fasting realigns our hearts and exposes what we may rely on more than God: comfort, control, entertainment, or routine.
4. Increased Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit
Many believers describe fasting as a time when they feel more attentive to God’s guidance and voice.
“So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.” – Ezra 8:23 (NIV)
A Prayer for Fasting
“God,
I want to know You more deeply. As I consider fasting, help me approach it with sincerity. Reveal anything in my life that competes for my attention or draws me away from You. Lord, teach me to hunger for You above all else. Strengthen me when it feels difficult and remind me that You are my true source of sustenance and peace. Draw me closer, align my heart with Yours, and do whatever work You desire within me. What an honor it is to release anything that leads me closer to You.
Amen.”
