Every September, we celebrate National Recovery Month. Established in 1989, this month-long observance recognizes the gains achieved by those recovering from substance use disorder. It also raises awareness for those who are still struggling with mental health and addiction. To this end, we’re highlighting a collection of Christian books that explore addiction, recovery, faith and family dynamics.
Substance Use Facts
Addiction is one of the most pressing health issues of our time. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimates that one in six Americans aged 12 and older has experienced substance use disorder in the past year. That adds up to 48.4 million people or about 17% of the population. For every person affected by addiction, many other lives are touched.
Chances are that even if you have never struggled with substance use or compulsion yourself, you know someone who has. If you’re like me, you have lost friends and loved ones due to addiction and mental health concerns. It may have been a sudden event like a suicide or overdose, or their life may have been shortened by chronic substance use.
Understanding Addiction
Addiction isn’t limited to drugs or alcohol. Many people quietly struggle with eating disorders, gambling and even adult content. While there are numerous evidence-based addiction treatment programs, people face many barriers. Some of the top factors include time, cost, shame and social stigma. That’s where faith can provide the strength needed to seek help and make strides in both the short- and long-term. There’s a reason why programs like Alcoholics Anonymous call on members to trust in a higher power, whether that power comes from God or another source.
Rather than emphasizing on the risks of addiction, let’s focus on the positive ways that faith promotes healing and recovery. Explore this collection of Christian books about addiction. You may find a title that speaks to you or could help someone in your life.

Freely Sober: Rethinking Alcohol Through the Lens of Faith
by Ericka Andersen
“Andersen offers important insights on how women’s relationships with alcohol are shifting as they grapple with increased pressures at home and work, and her approach wisely utilizes faith as a recovery tool without positioning it as a cure-all… Women of faith will be empowered.” —Publishers Weekly Review, September 2025
Get Honest about Your Relationship with Alcohol
Sharing a drink with friends or a glass of wine at dinner can be a nice way to enjoy God’s good gifts. But what if these casual enjoyments turn into unhealthy habits? For many, drinking can easily become a dysfunctional coping mechanism or a dependency that’s difficult to break.
In Freely Sober, Ericka Andersen invites Christian women to reconsider their relationship with alcohol from a posture of honesty, curiosity, and self-compassion, offering empowering knowledge and trusted recovery principles for those curious about sobriety or seeking a way out of a habitual or destructive relationship with alcohol.
Andersen vulnerably shares her own story of sobriety, reflecting on how her private drinking habits began impacting her faith and life. Through her honest account, she opens the door for sober curious women of faith to explore their drinking patterns and see clearly to choose what’s best for them.
Freely Sober features:
- Practical Tools for Growth: Includes reflection questions, action steps, and assessments designed to help readers see alcohol more clearly
- Faith-Based Guidance: Invites readers to draw closer to God in their sobriety journeys, leaning on the Holy Spirit and a supportive community for encouragement and accountability
- Accessible for a Variety of Stages: Great for those who are sober curious, questioning their habits, or who want to dig deeper into how alcohol affects their life and faith
Freely Sober charts a pathway to new habits, healing, and spiritual renewal through God’s abundant grace for those looking for change. Whether you’re struggling yourself with grey area drinking, are looking to support a friend or family member, or are a ministry leader looking for resources, Freely Sober offers wisdom and guidance for a way forward to freedom.
“You are free to decide–honestly, thoughtfully–whether your life is better with or without it. You don’t have to quit. You don’t have to cut back. But you can. And you can do it on your own terms, not because anyone told you to, but because you’re free to choose what serves you best. You can be freely sober.” – Ericka Andersen, Freely Sober

Fear, Faith, and Freedom: Breaking Through Life’s Challenges with God’s Help
by Jenn Dafoe-Turner
Fear, Faith, and Freedom: Breaking Through Life’s Challenges with God’s Help is a raw, redemptive journey from despair to deliverance. With deep vulnerability and spiritual clarity, author Jenn Dafoe-Turner invites readers into her story of pain, trauma, addiction, and ultimately, transformation through the power of Jesus Christ. Blending compelling personal narrative with creative retellings of Scripture, this book offers readers more than a testimony-it offers a path toward healing and wholeness.
Each chapter explores a different “battle” of life-fear, addiction, shame, identity, self-sabotage, church hurt, and more-and how God’s truth can bring lasting victory. Through heartfelt storytelling, biblical wisdom, and practical reflection, Jenn shows that freedom isn’t found in fixing ourselves but in surrendering completely to the One who sets captives free.
Structured as a spiritual memoir with devotional elements, each chapter concludes with a “gentle challenge,” reflection questions, a Scripture memory verse, and a heartfelt prayer. This format makes the book ideal for personal study, recovery groups, or women’s ministry settings.
Whether you are struggling with your own dark night of the soul or mentoring others through theirs, Fear, Faith, and Freedom will remind you that no battle is too great for God. His love meets us in the most broken places-and leads us, one step at a time, into a life marked by courage, hope, and the certainty of His grace.

The 3 Things: A Practical Path to Collective Recovery
by Maggie Boxey
Through Maggie’s drunken youth, she was reminded by her preacher father of The 3 Things: you are part of a family, be true to yourself, and glorify God in all that you do. But as Maggie shares in this transformational book, those old truths take on new meaning in modern life, recovery, and motherhood.
Sometimes, simplicity can untangle the most complicated messes. Even in the darkest pit with the cold hard slab of rock bottom pressed against our face, there is a lifeline of truth, a rope of wisdom we can grab to pull ourselves out. As Maggie Boxey curled into a tight ball of overwhelming shame, addiction, and isolation, she could hear her preacher father’s voice, echoing in her ears. “You are part of a family. Be true to yourself. Glorify God in all that you do.”
These were the three things Maggie’s Daddy would insist she repeat as a teenager before running out the door for “sleepovers” that were really trips to the darkest corners of town to binge drink with strangers. Each night, she would rattle off the 3 things before wandering off to pull herself further into the complicated mess it would take decades to untangle. It took her 25 hard, traumatic years for her to fully grasp the depth of her father’s words, through her time serving in the Navy, through addiction, and through losing custody of her child due to her behavior and instability.
The deeper Maggie sunk into addiction and isolation, the less she felt part of a family. Without community to see herself reflected back to her, it felt impossible for her to be true to herself. Instead of glorifying God in all she did, she resorted to foxhole prayers and felt unworthy of God’s love. She lived in the undoing of the 3 things until she found herself in an alcoholic suicidal bottom with only two ways to go: end it all, or surrender to a new beginning. She chose the latter.
With the 3 things as her guide, Maggie gathered powerful forces to aid her in her recovery: contemplation, community, celebration, and compassion for herself and others. She relied on her 12-step recovery community to help her get sober and put in the humble work to right the wrongs of her past. She became part of a family again, both chosen and inherited. Her compassionate honesty allowed her to be true to herself. And she remembered what it means to glorify God in all she did, whether that was taking out the trash, giving birth to her second child, or writing a book in service to others, The 3 Things.
In The 3 Things, Maggie Boxey shares how she used her faith to regain all she lost and find the will to start again, even when it seemed hopeless. She shares her struggles of being a sober progressive liberal living in military communities in the South. And as a die-hard Indigo Girls fan, she guides readers from all walks of life and religious backgrounds to get closer to fine.
Recovering Spirituality: Achieving Emotional Sobriety in Your Spiritual Practice
by Ingrid Clayton
Guides those in recovery in developing the awareness and skills to deal with life’s issues by practicing authentic spirituality and emotional sobriety.
Spirituality is a critical aspect of the Twelve Steps and other recovery programs. Yet, for those of us disposed to addiction, it can be easy to get so caught up in the idea of our Higher Power and the abundant joys of a spiritual life that we experience “spiritual bypass”–the use of spirituality to avoid dealing with ourselves, our emotions, and our unfinished business.
In Recovering Spirituality, researcher and clinical psychologist Ingrid Mathieu uses personal stories and practical advice to teach us how to grow up emotionally and take responsibility for ourselves. Without turning away from the true benefits of an active spiritual program, she shows us how to work through life’s challenges and periods of pain while evolving and maintaining an authentic relationship with our Higher Power.
Jesus + Seltzer: Stories + Meditations on Sobriety + Recovery
by Jason Umidi
Sobriety has a wonderful way of bringing all things into the light if you’re willing. Light! Such a simple and yet profound state of being.
Detox finally opened the door for sustained sobriety for actor Jason Umidi. On January 10, 2012, he began his sober journey. Gone are the mornings of regret and the feelings of shame no longer haunt him. Instead, gratitude for a life that’s been redeemed and restored permeates his entire being. The truth as he was experiencing it reminds him that he can’t keep what he doesn’t give away. This life of service is a beautiful reflection of the grace that Jason received. His sobriety requires him to live in the moment, his faith asks him to love as he has been loved and his spirit says, “here am I send me”.
Wherever you’re at in your personal journey may you find the Hope that is only found in relationship with your higher power or God.
After being clean and sober for a couple of years Jason was looking to share his personal journey on Facebook in hopes that someone might be encouraged by his story. This developed into popular short blog posts about addiction, recovery, and hope, known as ” Today’s One Minute Reads.” Jesus & Seltzer is Jason’s curated collection of his One Minute Reads.

God and Starbucks: An NBA Superstar’s Journey Through Addiction and Recovery
by Vin Baker – Joe Layden
An astonishing memoir of redemption–the moving story of a former top NBA player who miraculously rebounded from a monumental fall thanks to hard work and his deep, transformative faith.
Sixteen years ago, Vin Baker was an NBA All-Star, an Olympic Gold medalist, and a multimillionaire. While he excelled on the court, Vin harbored a dark secret: a dependency on drugs and alcohol that began after the clean-cut preacher’s son turned pro. Eventually becoming a full-blown yet functional alcoholic, Vin convinced himself he played better under the influence–until his addiction cost him his basketball career, his fortune, and his health.
But Vin’s story isn’t a tragic fall from grace. It is a joyous tale of salvation. For Vin, hitting rock bottom was a difficult yet transformative experience that led him to renew his relationship with God and embrace life in a rich and fulfilling new way. Today the manager of a Starbucks and a youth minister, Vin has found more security and happiness in his ordinary working life than in all his years in the glamorous world of professional basketball.
God and Starbucks is a wise and unflinching look at the real dangers of addiction and the importance of taking charge of your life with meaning and purpose. It’s a powerful memoir about reaching the top and beginning again from the bottom–an inspiring personal tale of humility and grace that reminds us what is truly important in our lives.

Tame Your Thoughts: Three Tools to Renew Your Mind and Transform Your Life
by Max Lucado
NOW A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
When was the last time you awakened to a swirl of anxious, out-of-control thoughts?
Perhaps you were overwhelmed with the weight of worry, the fear of failing, or the grip of guilt. The way we think directly impacts our joy and peace. In Tame Your Thoughts, Max Lucado provides three biblical and practical tools to renew your mind and transform your life.
Our thoughts have consequences. Most people would agree that positive thoughts generate positive actions. Negative thoughts activate negative behavior. But do we understand that we can manage our lives by managing our thoughts? Not only does neuroscience back this concept, but the idea is also embedded throughout Scripture. “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Rom.12:2 esv). Tame your thoughts and transform your life!
In Tame Your Thoughts, Max explores three key thought-management tools and then applies them to the most common thought problems: worry, guilt, anxiety, and other types of mental quicksand that threaten to trap us. God loves us too much to let us lead a life marked by poor thinking. He made our brains; he can retrain our brains. God has not left us alone in this battle of the mind.
Stuck in your head? Hounded by regrets? Weighed down by worry? Change is possible! The thoughts that have characterized your past need not characterize the rest of your life. You will learn to:
- Take thoughts captive
- Test each message against the truth of Scripture
- Interrupt poisonous thought threads
- Think and act like Jesus
If God can resurrect the dead, can he not resurrect hope? Defy depression? Clarify confusion? Silence shame? Destroy doubt? Banish bitterness?
Take God at his word. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Tim. 1:7 nkjv, emphasis added). With God as their helper, you will discover a new way of thinking and a better way of living. A new person will begin to emerge.
We can tame each thought, friends.

She also shares the vital skills and affirmations that she’s learned over the years for managing her mental health and remembering her reasons to live. Even if you can’t afford a therapist or hospital stay and the people around you are anything but helpful, you can still use those same tools to get better. It can be difficult sometimes to acknowledge to yourself that you’re worth it. It might be downright unbearable. But you know what? You’re so WORTH IT! And this book is here to help you realize it.

Beyond Wellness: How Restoring the Religious Roots of Spiritual Practices Can Heal Us
by Liz Bucar
Go deeper than superficial self-care with the religious secret sauce you didn’t know you were missing
“An emotionally and intellectually honest alternative for people who are seeking meaning beyond generic spirituality”–Dr. Pooja Lakshmin, author of Real Self-Care
In the chaos of today’s world, we’re all searching for meaning. The wellness industry has sold us a promise that we can find it if we just buy the right products, attend the right retreats, and follow the right celebrity gurus. But is this true? Or are we picking and choosing from a self-care salad bar in ways that satisfy our hunger but don’t truly nourish us?
When we approach practices like yoga and ayahuasca as fitness routines and life hacks, we miss out on the sacred wisdom they have to offer us. But by digging into the real and often ancient religious traditions behind these practices, from Buddhism to Christianity and beyond, we can make them more meaningful, ethical, and effective–without the often unpleasant baggage of joining an organized religion.
In this engaging and deeply personal book, award-winning scholar and writer Liz Bucar embarks on a quest to get to the heart of “spiritual but not religious” activities from detox diets to sound baths. As she tries out each practice for herself, she asks how we can get more out of it by tuning out the hype and taking the religious meaning behind it seriously–with emotionally profound and often surprising results. Whether it’s as simple as setting an intention for a yoga asana or as complex as reevaluating what a “higher power” is, it’s time to understand, experience, and simply get more out of our spiritual practices. It’s time to dig deeper with Beyond Wellness.

A Prayer for Healing and Recovery
Heavenly Father,
Today, I ask for Your healing grace and comfort. In moments of weakness and pain, remind me that You are close by, watching over me and holding me up.
Please restore my body, ease my mind and renew my spirit. When my own strength fails, let my faith in Your love provide the peace, patience and courage I need to heal.
Amen.
