Writing around the turn of the 20th century, Chesterton was a larger-than-life literary figure. He stood some 6’ 4” tall and weighed nearly 300 pounds. He also wore a cape, carried a swordstick and accessorized with a cigar.
Despite his flamboyant style, he was also a prolific Christian essayist and apologist. He created one of literature’s most enduring Christian detectives: Father Brown. The pastor-turned-detective solves crimes by understanding human weakness. The Innocence of Father Brown (1911) features 12 short stories and novellas starring the famous Christian detective.
8. P. D. James
Phyllis Dorothy James, better known as P.D. James, is a brilliant British fiction writer. Known as the Queen of Crime, she deftly incorporates her Anglican faith into many of her works although her books aren’t preachy or pious. She often explores the complexities of human nature and the ongoing battle between good and evil.
Her mysteries feature protagonist Detective Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh, a poet and vicar’s son turned detective. While you can always watch the Dalgliesh series on TV, Shroud for a Nightingale (1971) and Death in Holy Orders (2001) are excellent starting points. The first is less religious, while the latter is set at a theological college. Death in Holy Orders offers a deep exploration of Church politics and personal beliefs.
9. Dorothy L. Sayers
Dorothy Leigh Sayers was an accomplished British writer, poet, essayist, linguist and Christian humanist. Although she only wrote mysteries briefly between 1923 and 1939, she gave us some classic characters. She’s best known for Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane.
Harriet Vane is introduced in the sixth Lord Wimsey book Strong Poison (1930). The novel is a great jumping in point for the series. It features a clever murder mystery enriched with Sayer’s unique views on truth, justice and human dynamics.
10. Terri Blackstock
Named one of today’s top 40 Christian authors, Terri Blackstock crafts thought-provoking mysteries centered around moral dilemmas and real-world challenges. Two of her most popular series include Cape Refuge and If I Run.
In If I Run, which is recommended by Christian fantasy writer Caleb Ward, Blackstock makes the unusual choice of writing the book in first person. The story is told from the viewpoint of a young woman on the run. She’s being chased by a zealous private detective seeking revenge for the death of a childhood friend.
